IT IS DECEMBER ALREADY. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Aside from, you know, the earth rotating around the sun. Hey, did you know that scientists reckon there's more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth? Mad, right?

In other news, the results of the honesty meme are in and word is, I'm fabulous.

Who knew?

Almost time to decide the albums of the year! What do you guys think, which've been the standouts for you?

Favourite tune this week: New Doomsdays - Mimicking Birds. It's from an album released earlier this year, but I only really listened to the lyrics last week and they're very good.

And here's a mix I made for [livejournal.com profile] lemniciate this week, nine songs that put a smile on my face.

Tracklist:

When Life Gives Me Lemons I Make Lemonade - The Boy Least Likely To
Brunettes Against Bubblegum Youth - The Brunettes
Love Shack - B-52's
National Express - The Divine Comedy
A Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill - Jens Lekman
Jackie, Dressed In Cobras - The New Pornographers
Lay it Down - Peter Bjorn and John
I Turn My Camera On - Spoon
Ambling Alp - Yeasayer

Also, a favour, can someone upload the Pogues Streams of Whiskey if you have it please? Thank you in advance!

FINAL MERLIN IN A FEW DAYS. HOW HAS IT BEEN THIRTEEN WEEKS ALREADY? FUCK TIME, MAN.

dude, in five years, I'll be your age and you'll be THIRTY. I AM SO SAD FOR YOU, GRAMPS. time is such an assface.

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT MY LIST BUT I DUN KNOW. (now I'm going to leave you a bunch of pointless music thoughts because you've got me thinking and typing and well too bad if you didn't actually want them. too fucking bad.)
- I loved Interpol but the more I listened to it, the more I noticed how much better the other three albums were, ya know? and eventually I just stopped playing it and listening to Antics or TOTBL instead. =/ but I guess I'd have to include it in my top ten, if only for "Lights" lyrics. POLICE MEEEE.
- JOANNA NEWSOM : HAVE ONE ON ME. of course my horse. I've listened to her other two albums more but I started listening to her because of this so yea..ALSO IT'S REALLY GOOD. I mean, dayum. I must give her props for writing a two hour long album and keeping me entertained. and crying. SO MUCH FUCKING CRYING. have I told you that I wish "Only Skin" was written in A/M fic form? that shit would be so fucking tragic, but so beautiful. EPIC PEOPLE NEED EPIC LOVE yuh. "rowing along, among the reeds, among the rushes / I heard your song, before my heart had time to hush it! / smell of a stone fruit being cut and being opened / smell of a low and of a lazy cinder smoking" ;______;
- Heartland, I think..for sure. I guess it'd be somewhere in the middle, like my fourth or fifth of the year..THIS GUY'S CONCEPTS, THEY FUCK WITH MY MIND..and make me feel like a proper dumbass, but like, a cool dumbass..and A Swedish Love Story was pretty great as well.
- PARENTHETICAL GIRLS YUH YUH YUH. Privilege, Pt. II was probably my favorite thing released this year. Pt. I also blew my mind.
- Plastic Beach! I'm not a big hip-hop/whatever person, but Gorillaz are fucking great. ~~~~welcome to the world of the plastic beach~~

other random goodies:
The Black Keys : Brothers
Beach House : Teen Dream
Foals : Total Life Forever
The Radio Dept. : Clinging to a Scheme
GIGI : Maintenant (if only for Zac's contribution =X)
Twin Shadow : Forget
Warpaint, oh and Arctic Monkeys' "My Propellor" single was sexy..Hot Chip, Blood Red Shoes..

I don't know what's happening here anymore so I'll just stop.
I'm downloading that bsns rn. will you make a Christmas mix? I WANT ONE OF THOSE SO BAD. *WINK SEXY WINK*
MERLINNNNNNN. I might overdose on allergy pills and sleep until Saturday.

Dude, SHUT UP, that is just depressing. Someone kill me now.

You liked Our Love To Admire more than this new one? Eh, I don't see it, I thought this one was an improvement. BUT YOU KNOW MORE THAN ME when it comes to all things Interpol.

Ohh, nice lyrics there, but I'm afraid I just can't get into her voice :(((

Heartland, yesss, excellent album, I had it playing the other night and I wrote like a champ.

Grrrls, that is no surprise coming from you. Would you ever admit if they made a bad album? Could such a thing ever exist?

Oh, you liked Gorillaz? I heard some not so good things and I was never enough of a fan to begin with to bother getting the album, but cool, cool.

I never got round to getting that Black Keys album actually, I think I was so disappointed with Blakroc at the end of last year, I was half protesting maybe? Warpaint's album was good, Foals were okay, but I didn't like Arctic Monkeys :( Weren't they last year anyway? My year's are all fuzzy.

You know, I might make a Christmas mix just for you.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SMART PLAN ACTUALLY.

I KNOW. aging is more depressing than death. ;_; I hope I go before I'm 30.

but that has nothing to do with anything! knowing Paul's birthday and how to cook spaghetti the Sam Fogarino way doesn't help. and yea, I like OLTA more..um, I dunno..it got a bigger emotional response from me? something like that..

EVERYONE SAYS THIS. I get it..but it's a sad thing. =/

YES! hahahaha there's a good chunk of grrrls songs I don't like/never really listen to. I have to be in the mood to listen to their first album because it's a bit noisy, and not in a good way..and their second album isn't great musically, but lyrically it's kind of overwhelming..most of their Christmas songs also SUCK. hahaha but what I do love I fucking love (i.e. ENTANGLEMENTS) so the blips of mediocrity don't really bother me.

mhmm mhmm. I loved it. I've only heard good things! haha I think some people said it was a bit inconsistent or something though? I dunno..you should give a spin if you ever want new musiks.

yea, Humbug was last year but I'm talking about that single..I guess it's sort of an EP, it had four songs. I loved Humbug though! it was so ~mysterious~.

=O =O =O =O EXCITING.

I'm sorry I talk so much. =X

But then you won't ever have the chance to get haemorrhoids and I know you're looking forward to that experience.

a bigger emotional response from me

You pretentious whore.

Ohh right, okay, did not know that, I just knew My Propeller was on Humbug and I didn't like it.

NEVER APOLOGISE FOR TALKING, YOU ARE SO FUCKING ENTERTAINING. IF YOU WERE IN MY RL, I WOULD MAKE YOU TELL ME BEDTIME STORIES. I'M NOT JOKING.

YOU SHOULD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvSgLHWR16o oh my fuck, if God like..were to make a woman that physically embodied everything I found attractive, SHE WOULD LOOK EXACTLY LIKE SARAH.

oh and I'm loving this Jens song. IT'S PROBABLY GOING IN MY SWEDISH MIX. YAYYYYYY THANKS.

I DON'T GET THAT SENTENCE. She doesn't need to look exactly like Sarah because Sarah already exists, therefore your ultimate woman already exists. Yes?

like, if we'd gone to school together, we'd be neighbors, right..and maybe sometimes we'd hang out and talk shit about other people, but we wouldn't hang out at school..and we'd talk shit about each other at school to other people. does that make sense? Mele Kalikimaka - Bing Crosby And The Andrews Sisters

KM has this song "Looking For An Angel" yes? and I didn't really like it, but now I'm gonna like it real good. you know why? cause I'm going to pretend you wrote it and it was originally "Looking For An Angela" but KM changed it to "Angel". VINCA, OUT.

MIMICKING BIRDS IS JUST AMAZING as in.
I've listened to their The Loop (Nate Lacey) over 443 times, says Itunes. Last year's lullaby, fuck yes.
& AHAHA. They're a side-project of one of the members of Modest Mouse, which if you know them, that makes this doubly awesome.

&! Thank you for the mix! You have great taste. xD

From: [identity profile] starongie.livejournal.com
& because i cannot see fit to read through all your post because um. DISTRACTION OF FREE MUSIC IT IS NOT MY FAULT I AM WEAK.

OK.
Heartland, Owen Pallet. I've loved him since Final Fantasy, and it's kinda ridiculous, but he's grown up so much. You can see it in this album, and some reviews about it he's mentioned about how he's the god of Heartland this album creates, but Lewis is fighting against this - so in the songs Owen created he's literally writing about getting rid of himself from the point of view of the second narrator of Heartland (Lewis). the author has been removed & he created a world! within an album! he's probably one of the most talent violinists in the world, & hell, his lyrics are beautiful.

Have One on Me, Joanna Newsom.
Fucking hell, she blossomed - her voice is, it turned into a swan, that's all I can say. I still miss the little cygnet it used to be, that croon and distinction and the vocabulary words that she abused and shamelessly ran around, drawing worlds in orchestra and songs 6 to 9 minutes long with Ys, gosh. - but hell, Have One on Me is so lovely, and it feels insanely more personal. What I love best about her is the way she writes lyrics, and it's the way she pulls them off with harp & piano. She never fails to be something else; drawing songs over faerie tales and histories of mistresses, her sharp turns of phrase, the bitterness and the yearning you can hear from In California, Go long, and You & Me Bess. And how I can't really hate a song in here.

JĂ³nsi - Go.
JĂ³nsi & his band Sigur RĂ³s live in my soul. Rattle my bones and, oh, this album is a wavelength. It's, iridescent, if that makes sense, it's like a spectrum or a prism but all I know is that I feel like I have synesthesia when I think of them, and I think of wolves & wonder & iceland.

The National - High Violet (Yeah, yeah they're good.)

The Young Veins - Take a Vacation! (I was in Bandom, this is some half-hearted loyalty I have, and just. Ryan Ross.)
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (SO MANY TIMES LISTENING. Funeral was always going to be their Magnum Opus, & the Suburbs sounds watered down and less of it, but there's something. They've got so much soul.)

Cloud Cult - Light Chasers.
I listened to this album for two months straight. I doubt I even knew other songs could exist.

The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang.
I JUST LOVE THIS BAND. I have so much want for the life/lives they portray, for the singer's voice, for lines like your blood was mixed with wine and robbery baby/ and left us always wanting more and where they say these days/ nothing comes cheap/ and everything has a price/ everyone has a price/ not nothing is free/ not even me

Evelyn Evelyn - Evelyn Evelyn
OK. I realize there was a fuck-load of controversy over this, but to hell with that. It's Dark Cabaret. AND. The song Elephant Elephant will never not make me smile and think of puppets and overall happy catchy tunes.

(OK I AM SORRY FOR HOW BIG THIS ENDED UP BEING. I tried cutting down. & you don't actually know me! Hi! I hope this was an ok way to introduce myself. xD)

Date: 2010-12-02 04:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kylezy.livejournal.com
I don't think I knew they were a side project by one of the guys from Modest Mouse, that just makes them cooler then XD

And I'll have you know music talk is a brilliant way to introduce yourself! HI THERE xD I'm curious as to how you came across my journal, if you don't mind my asking?

You've got some great music taste there! Owen Pallett is genius, omg yes, so much love for Heartland. And Arcade Fire are great, though admittedly it took me a while to get into this album, it sounded far more poppy than I was used to hearing from them, it kind of shook me up a bit.

Date: 2010-12-02 05:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starongie.livejournal.com
It's the first thing I found out about them; and hell, you can't even tell, can you? That's the best thing ever. There's no distinct style that Modest Mouse imprinted on themselves.

UM.
Gosh. I'm. Not actually that sure? I friend everyone that looks interesting, (as in. free music, awesome meta/fandom thoughts, teaches me things! etc!) since I'm mainly a lurker & not anyone active - most of my journal entries are private private because it's really just for me to fuck around in a online diary that isn't one from like, Gaia. WELL. Probably lunatunes, now that I think about it. & the fact that you're a YAY MERLIN gal. xD

I can probably talk about Owen Pallet for ages, hell. I just want to be all dorky & pretentious and talk solipsism and legos and stuff.

Poppy! I guess that'd be the word. Their lyrics just felt. I mean compared to their other albums, the lyrics on the Suburbs were. They just stumbled and tried, maybe tried too hard to be one of the kids. More aware, less organic, something like that. I've rewritten and erased a million other ways to explain it. xD

YOU ARE FABULOUS. AND THAT IS THAT.

I have no idea re: albums of the year. I rarely buy albums, I guess? Only single songs unless it's a band I've been following for years. And not many of my bands have released new material this year. (Stars is the only one to come to mind and it took me a good month or so to warm up to their new record.)

If we were going for ~musical discoveries this year, I'd probably have a lot more to talk about :D

God, what am I on about, lots of people had new albums this year. I can't decide if I prefer her old Air-produced sound though. OH AND KINGS OF LEON. akjfdgh shutting up now)

A list in no particular order:

Antony and the Johnsons (love his voice, omg, though it's def. not everyone's cup of tea)
The National (so late to the party!)
Elbow
Great Lake Swimmers
A. A. Bonfy (edit: ahaha, that's a super Alter-Ego. Of course I meant Bondy /o\)
Mystery Jets
And then I kind of rediscovered Nickel Creek and in association Chris Thile. IT WAS ALL IN ALL A PRETTY GOOD YEAR.
