Aiming to start posting less, I realised I was being a prick with all my constant whining about being bored and/or emo. You guys didn't sign on for that shit and that's not what I'm usually about, honest. Well, I'm sort of emo tonight because I had a huge fight with my grandfather, but I'm not about to whinge about it in great detail.

A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise - Phosphorescent.
lunatunes theme of the week is Top 25, so I compiled the top 25 songs I've been listening to this month. You've definitely seen most of these posted in my fanmixes and here in my journal before, but I thought I'd post them again just in case.
New Kind Of Love - Plants and Animals (epic with a dash of epic sauce on the side)
I was younger, so much more innocent
I did not question what anything meant.
There's a river so we go where it goes
And get covered with dirt and rainbows.
Twilight - Breathe Owl Breathe (mellow but unexpectedly fun)
My lips are chapped and the compass is cracked,
And I don't wanna use the treasure map for a blanket.
Half Moon Street - Tap Tap (very British, self-deprecating, from one of my fave albums from last year)
My thoughts are tearing each other apart,
In the back of the car our conversation has probably gone too far.
Keep me guessing, tongue-tied and messy,
Don't make me feel stupid - I'll do that on my own.
Dreams - Smith Westerns (really great young garage band and the song reminds me of being a messy, awkward, punky teenager.)
In A Den - Starboard Silent Side (fantastic imagery, slightly folksy twang)
I take a swift look around, the lights are still on,
The room's upside down and my head hurts when I yawn.
You've got sequins in your hair, we've crumpled the sheets,
Your bottom is bare and your shoes still decorate your feet.
Everybody Come Outside - Pomegranates (a song you want to turn up loud)
Upside Down - Paloma Faith (think Amy Winehouse if she were happier and on less drugs)
Excuses - The Morning Benders (I believe someone already posted this one earlier, so this is the Yours Truly Session version, which can also be seen here)
And I made an excuse,
And you found another way to tell the truth.
I've put no one else above us,
We'll still be best friends when all turns to dust.
No One Does It Like You - Department of Eagles (slightly sexy, electric, experimental folk?)
Sleep On Fire - Holly Miranda (dreamy, spacious, makes you feel like the wind is in your hair)
There's no place I'd want to wake up,
But beside you.
Back Up Your Soul - Uniform Motion (for when you want to chill out or swing your hips)
Seven Nation Army - C.W. Stoneking (Wicked dirty blues cover of the White Stripes)
Cousins - Mumford & Sons (Vampire Weekend cover. I enjoy this version more than the original actually)
Stadium Soul - Adam Green (antifolk wrapped in a crooner's mellow tone)
I had to be affected, I had to be the schmuck who tries to be smart,
I had to be obsessive in my compulsion, in the effort of playing my part.
Ambling Alp - Yeasayer (my favourite LastFM tag for this song is "motherfuckin rabbits ejaculating sunshine". That's pretty much spot on.)
Forest Knolls - John Vanderslice (spooky and lonely, followed by hard, kickass brass noise, followed by overwhelming guilt because you want to replay a song that's quite possibly about cannibalism)
Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror - Jeffrey Lewis (my antifolk hero. This guy will make your lyrical expectations grow tenfold.)
Is it worth being an artist or an indie-rock star, or are you better off without it?
Cause, you know, maybe the world would be better if we were all just uncreative drones,
No dead childhood dreams to haunt us, a decent job, a decent home.
And if we have some extra time we could do real things to promote peace;
Become scientists or history teachers or un-corrupt police at least.
Brave As A Noun - Andrew Jackson Jihad (folk punk for when you feel like a loser)
I'm afraid to leave the house, I'm as timid as a mouse,
I'm afraid if I go out I'll outwear my welcome.
Evening Morning - Bombay Bicycle Club (automatically familiar but at the same time, sounds like the missing link on your playlist)
Angie - Bert Jansch (amazing guitar that will leave you envious. Davy Graham cover but you may know the riff from a Simon & Garfunkel tune.)
Tubthumping - Angus & Julia Stone (Chumbawamba cover. How on earth they managed to take a silly, fun song and give it such depth still amazes me every time.)
Northern Lights - Bowerbirds (I was a much bigger fan of their first album but this song is such a standout on their second. Romantic folk.)
And I do need the wind across my pale face,
And I do need the fern to unfurl in the spring,
And I do need the grass to sway, yes, I do need to know my place.
But all I want is your eyes (in the morning as we wake for a short while).
I'm A Pilot - Fanfarlo (epic, dreamy, piano-y, violin-y rock)
The Porch Swing - the Metasciences (great use of male/female vocals, good for wallowing in when you're having a sulk. Their entire album is available on LastFM for free.)
From A Sinking Boat - the Magnetic Fields (Sad, lonely and lovely.)
But know that I love you, know that I wrote my last words to you,
From a sinking boat.
David Cross' new comedy album, Bigger and Blackerer is great. If I had to pick on something, he does some stuff in the beginning that he obviously adds physical comedy to and being an album...you can't see it, obviously. So I guess it takes away from some of the humour, like the addicts with impeccable balance bit and this skit about a lady using a drink testing kit on a date. But really, you don't lose that much, he's still hilarious and probably the only comedian whose albums I can listen to again and again. Speaking of Cross, yesterday I found his "Squagel" bit on YouTube here (skip to 3.19). His fake tears will never cease to make me laugh.
Album recommendation for you - Bombay Bicycle Club's I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose. I know, this is last year's music, I'm a bit slow, yeah? Point is, it's quite a decent album. I mean, they sound like the Next Big Thing in the way Arctic Monkeys or Mumford & Sons did when they both came on the scene - just a new enough sound to make you sit up and wonder if that's the kind of thing that's been missing from your music player for a while. Enough time has obviously passed for me to be able to say they're not the NBT, for what little I've heard them mentioned, but it's a really enjoyable album nonetheless. There's a song of theirs in my top 25, if you want a listen.
The trailer for that Magnetic Fields doco that's being released in the US soon, with surprise (for me) cameos by Peter Gabriel, Sarah Silverman and Neil Gaiman.

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT? I have one on my left knee. I was snorkeling in shallow-ish water (say, shoulder height) with a friend at some school camp and she thought she felt a stingray brush over her foot, so she jumped on me (to save herself I assume) and accidently pushed me down onto some rocks. A real hero, that one.
2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM? Nothing at all. I have two framed things that need to be hung at some stage - a framed friendship poem that a friend gave me one birthday, which also has two feathers stuck on from another friend who gave them to me not long before she was killed in a car accident and a framed Beatles album I got from another friend for my 21st.
3. DO YOU SNORE, GRIND YOUR TEETH, OR TALK IN YOUR SLEEP? I used to talk in my sleep when I was a kid, but haven't had this confirmed any time recently. Date: 2010-05-08 11:58 am (UTC)That AJJ song is definitely one for me for day 11. I wish they'd tour as well. I'm not particularly a concert person, but I would go to every damn show they played.

Date: 2010-05-10 05:51 am (UTC)btw, Department of Eagles are sooo 2008. -rolls eyes- JK. I'm such a dick. I really love that album..it's sad that I don't listen to it that much anymore. =/ "Classical Records" was probably my second favorite, after "No One Does It Like You" of course..man, that song is just like WHOA. good shit.
anyways, I don't want to be all typical hipster and shizz, but the BBC demos/eps were better than the album IMO. =/ I don't know, it's like..the songs are too noisy or something on the album. IDK. just sayin'. they're so cute.
whoa, you have a lot of pets. your house must STINK. Idk, whenever Dexter (my brother's girlfriend's dog) comes over, he stinks up the house. it's terrible.
turkey >>> ham. always.

Date: 2010-05-10 06:13 am (UTC)I know, I have horribly late musical taste. At the time of release I was like 'ehhhh, do I want it, hmm nahhh' and now, of course, I realise I could have been listening to it for months and months.
I'd never even heard of them before two weeks ago, I'll have to check their earlier stuff, apparently they were quite the indie darling of mid-last year.
MY ANIMALS SMELL LIKE MOTHERFUCKING ROSES, OKAY. Nah, I mean, the chickens don't live near the house, the other 2 birds spend their day outside in their cage and it's only really the little dog who spends any time indoors.
Turkey is okaaaay. I was going to put chicken breast as my meat actually, but I have vegans on my flist, they'd only get mad and inform me exactly how the pressed chicken breast isn't actually all breast and I don't want to hear what I'm eating. Ignorance is bliss and all.
Grey/blue = OR BORING AND DULL, YES.
