Finally. The one that has been months in the making.
YOUR HEART ON THE LINE

ACT I
The Dream Before The Ring That Woke Me - David Karsten Daniels
There is a feeling you just can't explain,
There is a joy that you can't contain.
Keep The Dog Quiet - Owen Pallett
My body is a cage,
This union is cage, about a cage, about a cage.
And this, and this town too,
I'll see you once in a while but I can't be seen with you.
The Cactus Where Your Heart Should Be - the Magnetic Fields
The cactus where your heart should be has lovely little flowers,
So though it's always pricking me, my ardor never sours.
The cactus where your heart once was has power to rend and flay,
I stick because, I'm stuck because I just can't tear myself away.
Hearts A Mess - Gotye
You have lost to fear, doubt and distrust,
You just threw away the key (to your heart).
You don't get burned, it makes it easier (easier on you),
But that much more difficult for me,
To make you see.

The touch is brief and consolatory, impossible to notice for anyone but the receiver and yet Arthur snaps his hand away as if he's been burned. Merlin takes a small step back and in his gentlest tone, scolds, "Arthur, relax." He watches Arthur's eyes burn in reply, sees them dart around the crowded hall, desperately trying to find if anyone noticed the small moment of affection. None have, of course, because Merlin's not stupid, and he scolds again in a disappointed voice, "Arthur." The silence stretches between them but as Merlin gives in and begins to walk away, Arthur finally replies.
"Merlin..."
Merlin turns into the careful gaze, the one that hides things only he can see because he understands this man; his King, his love.
"I know, Sire. I know."

Untitled - Interpol
[Interlude One]
Surprise, sometimes, will come around.
Surprise, sometimes, will come around.
I will surprise you sometime, I'll come around.
Oh, I will surprise you sometime, I'll come around,
When you're down.

"You don't have to stay," Merlin sniffs, before sneezing wetly into the blanket. Arthur curls his lip in obvious disgust and tugs the corner of the blanket out of Merlin's weak grasp before tucking it in under the sick man's shoulder. "I didn't give you this so you could strew your disgusting bacteria all over it," he snits, carefully ignoring Merlin's words and loving grin.

ACT II
Holland - Sufjan Stevens
Fall in love and fall apart,
Things will end before they start.
Arms - Seabear
Thinking of a way,
To get you to stay,
And I promise to fight the wind,
And wait for you.
Hard Rain - Shout Out Louds
I try to tell myself at night,
When the dusty old pictures are all out of sight,
That I think I will be alright,
Just don't come closer morning light.
Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons
It was not your fault, but mine,
And it was your heart on the line,
I really fucked it up this time,
Didn't I, my dear?

Arthur is strong and brave but he cannot meet Merlin's eyes as the words tumble out of his own mouth. He only hears half of what he's saying, sparse syllables in a stream of confident uncertainty; he talks of marriage and the future Queen and we cannot and we must not, ever again.
Merlin doesn't say a word, doesn't communicate anything until his hand brushes over Arthur's as he begins to walk away. In that touch, Arthur feels an understanding he knows he doesn't deserve.

Untitled (Interpool Swimwear Remix) - Interpol
[Interlude Two]

The winter winds blow in late that evening and as snow buffets his window, Arthur continues to count the minutes without Merlin. The hours without someone smirking at him, the days that no one complains about being overworked, the weeks in which he hasn't been laughed at, not even once. Months pass in which the pair are separated by nothing more than the stone walls of the castle, but those walls might as well be oceans for all the comfort that thought brings him.
Arthur doesn't stop counting, and as the years go by, the seasons only become colder.

ACT III
The Bones Of You - Elbow
Do I have time?
A man of my calibre stood in the street like a sleepwalking teenager.
No.
And I dealt with this years ago, I took a hammer to every memento.
But image on image like beads on a rosary, pulled through my head as the music takes hold,
And the sickener hits; I can work 'til I break,
But I love the bones of you. That, I will never escape.
You're A Wolf - Sea Wolf
Old gypsy woman spoke to me,
Lips stained red from a bottle of wine.
"The one that you are looking for,
You're not gonna find her here".
Three Rounds And A Sound - Blind Pilot
Now I see you 'til kingdom come,
You're the one I want,
To see me for all the stupid shit I've done.
[...]
And the criss-cross of what is true won't get to us,
Cause you know me,
I could not give up on you.
Train Song - Feist & Ben Gibbard
It's so many miles and so long since I've met you,
Don't even know what I'll say when I get to you,
But suddenly now, I know where I belong,
It's many hundred miles and it won't be long.

And then suddenly he's not walking anymore, he's running, faster than he needs to and yet not nearly fast enough. He tears through his servants who gasp and grumble and begin to gossip no less than a few seconds after he's passed. He hears their murmurings and laughs, openly and more joyfully than he has in years. They talk of madness and perhaps they're right but he doesn't stop running, not now, not when he's finally found the courage that had abandoned him all these years. When he reaches the door, he uses all his force to get inside and there stands Merlin, looking only marginally shocked that his door has been kicked in.
There is a beat of silence and then Merlin smiles, all teeth and ridiculousness, and Arthur falls to his knees in benediction.
The End
(or, really, just a new beginning)

Notes:
- Firstly, I owe a debt of gratitude (and 20,001 sexual favours) to
seether_79 for putting up with my "ideas" as she created the gorgeous graphics for this mix. Also, love to
ems who wears beta pants like no other. The line "separated by stone walls that may as well be oceans" belongs to her. Big thanks as well to those on my flist who offered encouragement, support and suggestions as I worked on this, I love you guys.
- This might be a completely baseless rumour but I heard that every time someone comments here, Arthur grants Merlin a sexual favour of his choosing. Please, won't you think of Merlin's happiness and leave a little comment if you take the mix?
- Previous mixes: Arthur/Merlin, another Arthur/Merlin, yet ANOTHER Arthur/Merlin, Morgana, another Morgana, Colin/Bradley, another Colin/Bradley, yet ANOTHER Colin/Bradley, Arthur/Gwen breakup and the 24 song 'Not-very-serious Merlin character analysis'.
