In which I make all the tough decisions
Dec. 14th, 2009 01:53 pmI'm getting this in before I'm influenced by critic's lists, because I generally have no mind of my own.
Warning: not the best, just my faves.
Warning #2: I'm likely to change my mind in a few minutes.
Also, if anyone wants any of the songs, I'd be happy to upload for you :)

St Vincent - Actor
Jeff Lewis & the Junkyard - Em Are I
The Decemberists - Hazards of Love
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Sun Cut Flat - Running Of The Bulls (PS. their album is available for FREE download at their website, http://suncutflat.bandcamp.com/, if you're interested)
Songs of 2009:
Actor Out Of Work - St Vincent
Stillness Is The Move - Dirty Projectors
Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear
The Rake's Song - the Decemberists
Bite Hard - Franz Ferdinand
Lyrics of 2009:
Death - White Lies
If we suddenly fall should I scream out?
Or keep very quiet and cling to my mouth as I'm crying,
So frightened of dying, relax, yes, I'm trying,
But fear's got a hold on me.
Isn't it a Lovely Night - the Decemberists
Isn't a lovely night?
And so alive with fireflies providing us their holy light.
And here we made a bed of boughs,
And thistle down that we had found to lay upon the dewy ground.
White Blank Page - Mumford & Sons
A white blank page and a swelling rage,
You did not think when you sent me to the grave,
You desired my attention but denied my affections.
Forest Knolls - John Vanderslice
We've got food for weeks and weeks,
And all that blood would find its way to the carpet.
Sitting there I couldn't shake that guilt,
As the deer walked free up the hill.
To Be Objectified - Jeffrey Lewis
I left a trail of myself every place that I have been through,
And going bald is the most manly thing I'm ever gonna do.
I tell the earth, "thanks for the hair, thanks for the skin, thanks for the bone",
Though I now slowly give it back, I still appreciate the loan.
Lyrics of the decade:
We Looked Like Giants - Death Cab For Cutie
And together there,
In a shroud of frost the mountain air began to pass,
Through every pane of weathered glass,
And I held you closer than anyone would ever get.
Pressed In A Book - the Shins
Two fallen saplings in an open field,
Snow padding gently on an empty bench,
An old woman's jewelry lying unadorned,
Cold nesting robins allied for the first time.
I know when you hear these sappy lines,
You'll roll your eyes and say "nice try."
Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror - Jeffrey Lewis
(Just so you all know, it is taking extreme willpower for me to not post the entire lyrics, they are outstandingly honest)
This quest for greatness or at least hipness,
Just a scam and too much trouble.
But then, what makes one human-being worthy of an easy ride,
Born to be a natural artist you love or hate but can't deny?
While us minions in our millions tumble into history's chasm.
We might have a couple of laughs but we're still wastes of protoplasm.
I Don't Believe You - the Magnetic Fields
So you're brilliant, gorgeous, and,
Ampersand after ampersand
You think I just don't understand,
But I don't believe you.
Plus Ones - Okkervil River
I told you I can't listen, baby, 'bout the 4th time you were a lady, And how your forthrightness betrayed a secret shyness,
Stripped away by days of being hailed as "your highness",
And what's new, pussycat, as you were once a lionness,
They cut your claws out.
Albums of the decade:
Bowerbirds - Hymns For A Dark Horse
Andrew Jackson Jihad - People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World

Date: 2009-12-14 05:18 am (UTC)Candle in the Wind (Ben's song) was the one that made me fall in love, but I adore Growing Up, Brave as a Noun, Survival Song, Bad Bad Things, People and off their new one, Who Are You?. If I had to pick just one I think it'd be Survival Song.
It's really hard to play favourites though!
