In which I'm allowed to have feelings

Getting this out there before I read anyone's reviews, lest I be swayed.
As a casual viewer, I thought this ep was great. The acting was great (Angel especially) and the twist on the legend was fresh.
As a fan? I'm really disappointed they went in this direction. More specifically as a shipper, I should clarify, because it's great that in this retelling, the woman, Gwen, isn't the root of all evil. But Gwen leaving with Lancelot was my happy place as a Merlin/Arthur shipper because that's always been my head canon - Gwen betrays Arthur, Merlin sticks by him and somewhere down the line they fall in love (only then Arthur dies but yay reincarnation). I know that's not what the show wanted me to get from it, but I've got a careful shipper heart and I only ever really ship something that could be a real possibility. Again, not because I thought the show would actually go there, but because it could be real; that it was no stretch of the imagination (in my point of view) that feelings could develop between Merlin and Arthur. If I thought about it it my head, it would all make sense in terms of what the show has showed us and what we knew of the rest of the legend.
It appears now though, in this story, that this is the great betrayal and I think we can guess that it will all be fixed by season's end.
So how, as someone who finds joy in fic that adheres to canon, can I look at this Merlin and Arthur the same? How can I believe that Arthur will ever find love with Merlin, if he's got no reason to ever move on from Gwen?
I could have lied and said I cared about the integrity of the legends. But I don't. I just want these boys in love.
On another note, as a fan in general: I have defended this show a lot and a good chunk of that has been in the defence of Gwen. She's been called a Mary-Sue and rightly so, but I always thought they did that because she had to be perfect, she had to be: how else would viewers ever like someone they knew was going to commit such an awful betrayal down the line?
So, salt to the wound, not only is she still pure and perfect, but the irrational Gwen haters had a point. I fucking hate that.
On a final note, I put it to you: Agravaine - ultimate creepster?

Date: 2011-11-27 02:07 am (UTC)As I said before I'm so disappointed that this is what the legendary betrayel came down to; not even real! I hate what they've done to Gwen/Lancelot because I honestly believed Lance was Gwens true love and that when the "betrayel" came I would not even feel that bad towards either character because it would be TRUE LOVE ♥_♥ But instead perfect Gwen is still perfect and her importance in life has been reduced to nothing but wanting to be a love interest. The fact that she was all "I've wanted nothing more than to be your Queen" just made me disappointed in her.
I hate that the plot wasn't brought out in the open and that Lancelot will now be remembered as anything but noble. I dont get why Gaius and Merlin didn't actually figure out the whole story, I really thought they were going there, like Merlin was going to question Gwen and they'd figure it out as they usually do. But they didn't. Also I'm sick of Arthur being so fucking thick!! Enough already! I dont get how he wouldn't be able to tell that somebody so noble (who sacrificed himself for Arthur to live) would be the same person, particularly when everyone is so keen to cry "SORCERY" all the time.
not only is she still pure and perfect, but the irrational Gwen haters had a point. I fucking hate that.
I like to think that I'm a rational Gwen hater, lol. Well hate is too strong a word I guess, dislike would be appropriate though. But you know what, as somebody who is usually able to rip into Gwen so easily, I found her so boring this ep. Don't get me wrong; Angel was acting her socks off, but I just didn't care for her plight. I found myself not even caring about Arthurs broken heart because I still find Angel and Bradleys chemistry so fucking wooden. Santiago and Angel were sizzling this ep and I was like "this is why they should be focusing on G/L!!!". But I think the fact that this ep pretty much resigned her to nothing but "love interest" I just lost interest in her whatsoever. Which was disappointing after last weeks ep where she actually go to play an active role.
In terms of what this does for M/A I really don't know. I'm sort of like you in the sense that I know it will never be canon but I too thought there would always be that possibility once Gwen was out of the picture. So now I have no idea.
Also Agravaine- creeper for sure! Also he is just the new Morgana; Merlin and Gaius keep quiet about him for an entire season when they should just fucking out him!
Urgh feelings! (sorry html fail, had to repost)

- merlin's cheeks when he was crying. they looked like puppies. PUPPY CHEEKS.
