I can't recommend this lotr fic enough. I don't think you need to know anything about the fandom itself, except that they filmed in New Zealand and that there were men, elves and hobbits (there is mentions of the costumes and of men being smarter than elves), which you probably already knew just from general knowledge. Like I said, I can't rec this enough, it (and maybe more so its sequel, which is sexier and angstier) is so damn good.
