Ahhh, final Harry Potter book, you didn't disappoint. Much.
Let it be said that I did read spoilers in advance on various websites because I have very little patience and I couldn't wait to see who lived and who died. But I did restrict myself and try to stay away from as many plot details as I could. I'm glad I did.
Because wow. For the last half of the book I think I was holding my breath every time I turned the page. Everything was so exciting. The first half of the book dragged slightly and even though I don't think I was ever bored with it, I have a feeling I'm going to find it difficult to re-read, like I do with book six.
Things I liked:
*The battle at Hogwarts. Everything I immagined. The spiders, house-elfs, centaurs and giants all contributing to the war on their respective sides. Curses flying everywhere. Hogwarts castle being torn apart. Deaths galore. And that final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort in front of EVERYONE.
*Dumbledore's shady past. Hello, unexpected much?!
*Harry was an accidental horcrux. I have been listening to people whine about how ridiculous this theory is for months and months (while I always thought it was plausible, everyone wanted to shoot it down immediately) and it's nice to be able to go 'ner ner ner'.
*Ron coming back after he left in a tizzy and saving Harry's life and them having a big hug as they made up. Ron destroying a horcrux! Also, Ron finally learning how to speak to women.
*Neville risking his life and killing Nagini. OH NEVILLE, SO GLAD YOU DIDN'T DIE! And Neville being the one to organise the resistance at Hogwarts. So much love.
*Harry using 2 of the Unforgivable curses. He just HAD to in this book, he was ready. I'm glad he didn't use the Avada Kedavra though.
*I'm also really glad that some things didn't happen the way everyone just automatically assumed. Like how everyone expected Neville to kick Bellatrix's arse, Mr Weasley to totally pwn Mr Malfoy, Wormtail paying his life debt back to Harry. Those, although justified, would have been too anticlimactic to read, I think. Although Wormtail's death...well, we'll get to that in the 'things I didn't like' section.
*Lupin wanting Harry to be Teddy's godfather.
*Crabbe (I think) inadvertently destroying a horcrux with his fire-starting spell. Idiot :D
*Weasley twins joking about George's ear loss. You gotta admire their spirit!
*Percy's apology. He was one of my least favourite characters since book five but somehow I was still cheering when he yelled his resignation to the new Minister. I reckon a lot of people are going to have issue with how quickly the family forgave him but I don't think they were ever really mad at him. Molly and Authur weren't, certainly. The kids acted like it but on the inside I think they were all devestated by the fact they'd 'lost' their brother. They may have picked on him but there's no doubt in my mind now that the kids loved him as much as they loved their other siblings.
------------
Things I didn't like:
*Wormtail's death = anticlimax. Snape's death = not really anticlimax, just not a very 'good' way of dying.
*WTF REMUS? Did you lose your balls in the beginning? At least he made up for it a little bit but geez. I can't believe he wanted to leave his family even if he thought it was for the best.
*The Malfoys. Are they good or evil? Sure, Narcissa didn't tell Voldemort that Harry was really alive, but not because she was on the good side, she did it to find her son. Make up your mind you twats!
*Hedwig's death. Animal deaths are NOT COOL.
*OMG Fred! I hated this just because I don't like to think about how poor George would cope without his 'other half'. SO SAD!
*The Epilogue. It was nice that we got to see Harry happy with his new family but can you say 'cheesy'? I STILL think there's no way Harry would name one of his kids after Snape, even though it's right there in print.
*We STILL don't know what the veil is.
*Dumbledore's shady past. Ok, so this is in my 'good' section too but, MAN! I was not liking the old fella until the Kings Cross chapter.
*Another orphan being created from Lupin and Tonk's deaths. Poor Teddy :(
*Dudley at the beginning. Ok, so I didn't hate this, it was sweet, but srsly, WTF?
*Begins the re-read*
